A ribbon cutting ceremony was held in Glade Park on Friday, celebrating the completion of a bridge that is critical to residents and ranchers in the region.
The bridge was built in 1966 and crosses over the Dolores River. In 2006 it was given a poor sufficiency rating. Officials said failure to construct a new bridge would have resulted in a 100 mile detour for residents and recreational enthusiasts in the area.
In addition to community members, all three county commissioners were at Friday's ceremony.
Commissioner Steve Acquafresca said, "This is really a solid, sustainable ranching industry up here and it's a major contributer to Mesa County's economy. We believe the construction of the new bridge will help to shore up that industry for a long time."
The grant awarded for the project was administered by the Colorado Department of Transportation. It was roughly $762K with a $190K local match out of the Mesa County Transportation Capital Fund.
